NO that advice was wrong. You do not need to amend your return or amend his return. Your return is right and done. Open his return.
On his return, Go to Personal Info
Click Edit by his name
Continue to the 3rd screen and check the box
My GOD! that worked! I checked that someone else is claiming him and his refunds went down so I presume it worked.
Now how do I send it. Do I go through the process to file it again?
Now there is a different challenge. I mailed in his state return from the previous form and he did not owe. Now that I can claim him He now owes the state of IL IRS $33.
Should I just print it again and send the check for the $33? I do not want to efile it because the state costs $25 to efile. Or do I wait for the state to contact him?
I feel like I am almost at the end of this tunnel.
File the state return by mail with the payment. They may be satisfied with that and if not they may ask you to amend, but the tax payment will be made with little to no late payment fee.
File the federal by e-file and don't be concerned about the state in this process. It's likely to reject since one may have already been accepted. If it does go through then you can still send the paper file with the payment and mark it duplicate.
Thank you so very much! Thank everyone who helped me.
I feel like I see the light at the end of a very long tunnel.
Have a great day!
