My U.S. non-citizen son has SSN now, Can I claim full child credit for him for 2022 tax year

My biological son (staying whole yr with me), who is under 10 yr old, and is a non U.S. citizen was claimed for dependent child credit $500 with ITIN until 2021 tax year. But this year in 2023 (2 days ago) he has got SSN with work authorization.
Question: Since he has got SSN finally, can we claim full child credit for him or not?

Yes.

however, you may be blocked from e-filing since the new information will not match your prior information. If that’s the case, you will need to print a return and file by mail.

also, you need to send the IRS a letter informing them of the change. (Unfortunately, sending a letter now will not actually allow you to e-file; the e-file database is not updated that often, so if you are blocked, sending a letter will not unblock you to e-file.)   See the instructions here.

Thank you so much for very informative reply and yes, I reviewed these instructions and makes sense to write a letter with paper filing that is not an issue for me.

Thanks and appreciate your response!

You should try to e-file first, it might go through. It’s faster and more secure. But if it doesn’t, don’t be surprised, and just file your return by mail instead of trying to fight with the e-file computer system.

The SS statement is file separately from the tax return (and to a different address)   but unless your 10 year old file a prior year return it is not needed.  His getting a SS# should not stop you from efiling the return however if the return is rejected at first  I highly recommend trying again (every couple of weeks) until it is accepted since the SS# usually takes 6 - 8 weeks to be updated from the SSA to  the IRS system.   If you mail in a return that could take 6 months to a year to process ... not the best choice.

What do I do when I am assigned a social security number (SSN)?

Once you receive a SSN, you must use that number for tax purposes and discontinue using your ITIN.  It is improper to use both the ITIN and the SSN assigned to the same person to file tax returns.  It is your responsibility to notify the IRS so we can combine all of your tax records under one identification number.  If you do not notify the IRS when you are assigned a SSN, you may not receive credit for all wages paid and taxes withheld which could reduce the amount of any refund due.  You can visit a local IRS office or write a letter explaining that you have now been assigned a SSN and want your tax records combined.  Include your complete name, mailing address, and ITIN along with a copy of your social security card and a copy of the CP 565, Notice of ITIN Assignment, if available.  The IRS will void the ITIN and associate all prior tax information filed under the ITIN with the SSN.  Send your letter to:

This is more clear and thanks for increasing my understanding further. This is very helpful to plan filing. I always use TurboTax to e-file and will do the same for this year again and file separately to inform IRS regarding change. I am new and all this help is highly appreciated from experts like you both!
