The Adjusted Gross Income for which tax year 2021 or 2020?
If you are referring to the 2020 AGI and you did not transfer the 2020 return to the 2021 online return, you can enter 2020 AGI in the File section of the program when the return can be e-filed in January 2022.
For tax year 2021 the AGI is calculated by the program after you have entered all of your income and any adjustments to income.
You can view your Form 1040 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
For many (myself included) the AGI shown on the 2020 tax return is wrong. That's because of the change in 2020 tax law where the IRS exempted the first $10K of unemployment from being taxed. They passed that law retroactively after I had already filed and received my refund. So I didn't get my additional refund until months later. That effectively changed my AGI, though I don't think it should have. (Income is income, taxed or not).
What I had to do after making a backup of my originally filed 2020 tax return, was go into TTX 2020 to change it. Turns out, I didn't need to because an update issued by TurboTax basically changed it for me, without my knowledge or consent.
I ended up pulling a transcript of my 2020 tax return at www.irs.gov/individual/get-transcript. Turns out, the AGIN on the transcript is different from the one in TurboTax, even after a program update supposedly "corrected" it. So when it's time I'll be using the AGI on the Transcript.
When it is time to e-File, enter the correct AGI number.
You have to enter the number that was on your originally filed tax return.
It helps to print your filed tax return for your records.
I'm here in 2023. TurboTax shows a different AGI than what is on my actual return. Not sure why. I'm using a different program to file this year, but came back to TurboTax to get my AGI. Used the amount TurboTax listed at first and got rejected for AGI not matching IRS records. Downloaded my actual return and the number was different than TurboTax shows in the "view adjusted gross income" tab. Used the actual number and was accepted.
