It looks like any configuration changes in the PC will trigger this stupid Activation bug. Not just adding internal or external disks, even simple driver changes or a new feature added to the machine gets into the same trouble till you exhaust the 5 activation attempts the Turbo Tax counts.
Note that the disclosure on the purchase says up to 5 machines not up to 5 activation attempts on the same machine.
This is just pure fraud.
The support agent said they were giving me another activation code, but after a week nothing happened and I'm still waiting for a new 2021 Home and business activation code.
So frustrating, maybe its time for a Class Action lawsuit of some kind...
That may end up being a good solution - I purchase the same product 3 times last year because I had no clue what was happening. Beyond being angry and frustrated!!

Keep in mind the I lost both activations for 2020 and 2021 Turbo Tax Home and business at the same time on the same PC.
The same bug is affecting all 3 years versions of Turbo Tax 2019, 2020, 2021.
It is sure time for a class action suit!
Maybe Intuit will finally start listening to the customers! 😫😫😫
Like other users I also filed a consumer complaint to the Better Business Bureau.
We'll see if I get any response.
so far have not had any problems with opening I do 4 fmily returns and have been able to start each on with out a problem.

Here we go again, I just updated my Windows 11 system to a new version and the activation bug popped up again on 03/04/2022.
Asking me to activate again on the same PC that was already activated and working for the last 2 months.
This bug has been going on for 3 years and Turbo Tax still doesn't have a proper fix.
In this case a simple update of the Windows system was enough to get this bug to show up again.
Last time I had this issue I called technical support agents and they promised to call me back or email a new activation code, but it never happened. They gave me a case number, but never followed up on it, they just sent me a link to a survey and said that the case was closed, even if it wasn't.
This is 2021 Turbo Tax Home and Business for a Windows Desktop.
After complaining through the Better Business Bureau, I got this email below, but I never heard from the specialist they promised. Now I have the silly bug happening again.
Luckily, I have a backup of my original windows system and I just restored it to solve the problem temporarily.
I just want Intuit and Turbo Tax to fix this annoying activation problem, but they are not listening to all the users complaining about this.
A change of the computer configuration or an update of the windows operating system should not cause this type of issue.
All they have to do is tie the activation code with the Serial number of the PC and it should be always valid regardless of the updates or the configuration changes of the machine or how many times I activate the same machine for the same product.
Even a USB flash drive plugged in is enough to expose this bug of the activation process, any configuration change of the hardware or, in this case an update of the operating system expose this serious flaw on the activation process of Turbo Tax.
Please Turbo Tax, get it fixed once and for all.

I have not had any problem this year--I have been able to activate Turbo Tax with a flash drive attached and not attached. Last year this was a big problem--I did down load the 2021 version without a flash drive attached to my lap top so I assume in my case there is no problem
You are a lucky one. I have not been so lucky year after year (not that luck should play a part in something so simple).
I have not let my computer update anything including my antivirus or malware software since January, and I won't until I am done using Turbo Tax sometime later this month (March). I have not attached my external hard drive to backup anything up either. While I'd prefer to enter my tax documents as they come in, I won't open Turbo Tax unless I have to out of fear it'll eat up my remaining activation code. I have not opened it since mid-February and I have several tax documents to enter. I suspect that when I do open Turbo Tax it will update and again ask me for an activation code as it has in the past. This should not happen.
If this were any other software I'd never use it again. I will be buying H&R Block tax software for next year. I've read it can import Turbo Tax files, but I'm at the point where I'll gladly enter all the raw data in from scratch. I had already stopped the Turbo Tax auto-renew function last year, but foolishly bought Turbo Tax again this year in the hope they finally fixed this bug. It's obvious now that Turbo Tax will not fix this issue.
I've NEVER had any other software require repeated activation unless I removed and reinstalled it. Turbo Tax should call Microsoft or any other software company for a consult. Many of the Turbo Tax Users have more knowledge about software activation than does the IT Dept at Turbo Tax.
As an executive, a problem like this would occur only ONCE. If it happened a 2nd time, heads would roll. This bug has been going on for years with no sign of a fix nor concern by Turbo Tax. Turbo Tax USED to be the best tax software out there, but no longer due to their bad business practice with this issue. Outsourcing isn't always the best decision when you're messing with your bread & butter product. I won't use Quicken or any other Intuit product as I have lost faith in Intuit. I had an older version of Quicken I removed last year instead of updating it because I lost faith in Intuit, and I see the downward spiral Intuit is headed. At least Excel is reliable to track my financials and it's time to put this unnecessary Turbo Tax problem behind me and use H&R Block Tax software in 2022.

Maybe you will get lucky with H&R Block Tax software in 2022.
I tried H&R that last year when this B.S. activation problem with Turbo Tax was continuously popping up.
Unfortunately I had a bad experience with H&R too, so I'm back to this activation issue with Turbo Tax.
I hope Intuit and Turbo Tax finally wake up and fix this nonsense once and for all.
This is simply fraudulent on their part and they keep ignoring all the user's reports about this defective activation process.
That's absolutely ridiculous to have to do this every time. TT should have came up with a fix way before the filing deadline in 2019. When I called support I told him I bought the CD Mac Version for 2019 Home & Business and would not give me another activation code because I couldn't locate my actual receipt and that pisses me off because I also register my TT S/W every year with them since 1995 and if they looked at the history on my account they would've noticed that however low n behold they delt all of my previous years that were attached to my accounts as well. So that was strike two and I still can't get into my 2019 TT version so anyone with any ideas; swing them over to me please; I'm getting desperate here
