I filed an amended return to convert MFS to MFJ. Was supposed to receive a nice refund as a result. The amended return was received May 2023, but not processed until September 2024. However, it was processed incorrectly. Instead of looking at column C line 22 to see the refund total, they looked at column B line 11. this was the amount of tax my wife owed. The IRS did not look at the amount of payments and withholding we (column B line 12 and column C line 16). They took the amount from column B line 11 and decided that was an unpaid amount, to which they tacked on years of interest and sent me a bill. I have made half a dozen calls to them to try to get this fixed, but they are being beyond useless. They are now sending me threatening notices that I will have my wages garnished. Is there some recourse I have to speak with a competent person that can fix their mistake?

Did she pay her amount due on her original return?

yes, both original MFS returns were filed on time and all taxes paid.
Did you ever get this resolved? I have the same situation. Switched from MFS to MFJ for 2021 and they took the amount from line 11 and said it was additional tax assessed even though that is what my wife had already paid. I was supposed to get $4222 refunded and now they say I owe them $1483. It is ridiculous. I cant even get any of these clowns from the IRS on the phone. I am stuck at this point. To top it off, they NEVER notified me of any errors on my amendment. I filed it in February 2024 and didn't receive a thing until June 2025.
Yes I did. Long story short I had to get tax advocate service involved as someone on this forum suggested. They were super helpful and nice. It took a very long time but everything was resolved correctly. Best of luck
