Tax Year Prior to 2020: Importing information from Edward Jones

Some of the things that have seemed to work for others in the past include one or a combination of the following:

1) Turn off two-factor authentication with Edward Jones (temporarily for the import)

2) Change your Edward Jones password to something simple without special characters (temporarily for the import).  Note that it seems like it might take a day or two for this password change and/or the two factor authentication change to cascade through the system.

3) Try different internet browsers (Explorer vs Chrome vs Edge vs Firefox or whatever).

Good luck.  Make sure to report the issues up the chain at TurboTax and at Edward Jones.  The squeaky wheel gets the grease and someone will eventually decide to invest the time into figuring out what is going on here if enough people complain.  Some users have reported everything magically imports correct after complaining for a day or two.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Importing information from Edward Jones

I asked this question originally while doing my taxes last year (2019 tax year). I did my taxes on Saturday and had absolutely no problem with Edward Jones. All information downloaded with no problem.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Importing information from Edward Jones

Whew! I've successfully filed my 2021 taxes using TurboTax Premier and was so impressed with how easily it imported my Edward Jones information. My investments were the main reason I thought I needed TT Premier. I have no other income because I'm on Social Security. I have no taxes to pay. Next year, I'd like to try TurboTax Free. Two questions: Is TurboTax Free the same as TurboTax Online? Will TurboTax Free allow me to import my Edward Jones information as easily as it was using TurboTax Premier?

@celkins

A lot depends on what happens in your EJ account.  IF you have even $1 of sales transactions, stocks, bonds or Mutual funds, or any bond redemptions, then Online Premier is required. ...not even "Online" Deluxe will do that. .    IF only a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV is needed, then sometimes the "Free' version will do and that my not include the ability to "import " the forms.   Also, I'm not sure whether that would include premium amortizations, nor accrued interest declarations that might be a part of your 1099-INT form

Desktop Deluxe can import and use all the EJ stuff though  (Desktop BASIC is supposed to also, but it is pretty crude, and there is no free state download with "Basic" )

Thanks SteamTrain. That was helpful. Desktop Deluxe might be the safer bet. Do you happen to know if, having purchased Deluxe for example and it doesn't do what I need it to, I can upgrade to Premium mid-stream without having to pay full purchase price again?

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Importing information from Edward Jones

The upgrade is within the Desktop program, and the extra fee for the upgrade is "supposed' to be just the added difference.

IF you do buy Deluxe in the future, and you need to file a State too, you should note that some desktop Deluxe's are sold without an added 1-free state software set included, so you have to be careful if buying from, a 3rd party  (Amazon, BBuy, Staples etc.).  But if you buy from the TTX store itself, TTX only sells desktop Deluxe with one state software set included.....and never buy from a strange fly-by-night source.

Desktop Premier and H&B only come with one free state software set....but note that e-filing the state, even with the one free state software set...that is an extra $20 or $25 at time of filing it  (Except for NY...no extra charge).   Printing and mail-filing the state is free for the cost of yoru own paper and postage...but only a few people nitpick that, as sometimes state mail-processing can take longer.

Thanks again, @SteamTrain.  I was a bit surprised when I had to fork over the additional $20 for a Colorado state return. I thought "one free state software set" meant just that. But you're right that I chose not to nit-pick this. I had already spent 2 full days trying to get my IRS account, so by the time TT wanted more for the Colorado return, I would have given them any amount of money to simply be done with the ordeal. Not TT's fault; it was the IRS again.

@celkins    Ahhh, it wasn't clear to me that you were already using Desktop Premier.  My first comment was about the Online software "requiring" Premier...which is different from the desktop requirements.

Supposedly, the desktop Premier offers some extra help over the Deluxe version, but I haven't used Deluxe myself in ages to see what that really means.  I used to get desktop Premier for free, so I've just stuck with it.

Good Luck

You may want to make sure you are entering your password correctly and grant third-party access for TurboTax to import. I have also provided a few helpful links below. If you are still having issues after checking out those links, please respond back here and let us know:

What if I can't import my 1099?

How do I enter a large number of stock transactions in TurboTax Online?

How do I import my 1099s?

I have tried all of that and none of it seems to work. Have also spoken to Edward Jones and they are saying nothing is wrong on their end. Just struggling as it is a lot to update manually and was hoping for an automated updated. Tried talking on line to turbo tax too and all they kept me on hold and then just cut me off. my experience with the software has not been good so far

@UdayAnujaTax

Other things to try, from what some other users have posted in the past....

1)   Make sure you type in the UserID and Pwd yourself, do not use any autofill software.

2) If the PWD contains a lot of special characters  (&%$#?@ etc) , you might try simplifying it in your EJ account first (don't recall which/if TTX can't use some...wish I knew which it could use)

3)  IF the PWD is really long, shorten it.  I know 11 characters is OK, but I don't know what upper limit above that TTX might have.
