Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I want to use turbotaxonline to file 2020 taxes. It is 12/3/2021 and it is defaulting to 2021 taxes. How do I do it for 2020?

I started my tax return and it is asking tax year 2021 questions even though 2021 is not over yet. How do I switch to a 2020 turbotaxonline return? I need to use the online product because of very large 1099-B forms that I cannot import with the desktop product.

TurboTax Online has less capacity for 1099-B than does CD/Download.

In any case, you cannot do a 2020 tax return with Online, it is now dedicated to 2021.

As an active investor, be aware that your category Box A or Box D sales without adjustments do not require Form 8949, so there is no reason to import or key in those transactions.
Instead use the "enter a summary" option to put your numbers on Schedule D Line 1a or Line 8a.

If you have wash sales, it gets more complicated since those adjusted transactions have to be itemized on Form 8949 (or equivalent) and the summary totals adjusted accordingly.

Sorry it's too, late to start a 2020 online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS.  Online is only for 2021 now.

To do a prior year return you have to buy the Desktop program here,

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on.

using the 1099-B worksheet for form 8949 you can enter summary totals for each category A,B,C,D,E,F. since you have to mail in the 2020 return you would then need to attach a copy of the 1099-B. code M must be entered in column F for each line on the 8949 where you are entering summary totals

you can also just enter summary totals for types A & D in the top section of the 1099-B worksheet as long as there are no adjustments. then you do not have to submit details to the IRS

IRS requires details to be listed on a Form 8949,
or on your other forms (e.g. consolidated 1099-B) which have the same information and in the same manner as Form 8949.
Either way, if you choose to summarize, you have to mail the transaction details to the IRS within three business days of IRS accepting your e-Filed tax return.(unless you have attached a PDF of the transactions details to your e-Filed return.).
Exception: if you summarize Category A or Category D, Form 8949 is not needed for transactions without adjustments. No mailing is necessary.
If you don't have a 1099-B for crypto your sales category is C or F.

There is no exception for these categories.

As pointed out you have to file 2020 on paper, so you can include  the printout with your filed return rather than mailing to a separate address.

The consolidated 1099-B in PDF can be submitted at e-File time using TurboTax Online only (as of 2020), but again as also pointed out, it is too late to do it that way.

"Instead use the "enter a summary" option to put your numbers on Schedule D Line 1a or Line 8a."

If you summarize (recommended),

you only need to supply details of 1099-B covered transactions with adjustments that are not listed on your e-Filed Form 8949. and all non-covered transactions not listed there.

In other words, for active investors, generally this is a list of the Wash Sales.

If you plan to mail your entire consolidated 1099-B,

put your amounts for all covered transactions on Schedule D Line 1b or Line 8b.
