I shifted my VISA status from F1-OPT to H1B on 1st October 2019. Made a mistake filing with turbotax. How can I correct this?

I was under the F1 visa from 2016-2017 and switched to H1b visa in October 2019. I filed my taxes using turbotax . Soon after i realized that i do not pass the substantial presence test since i have only been under the H1b visa status from october 2019 to present. How can I correct this?

Because you are considered a nonresident for tax purposes you are required to complete a Form 1040-NR.

To correct the problem, you will need to file a Form 1040-X to amend your TurboTax Form 1040 to change it from a Form 1040 to a Form 1040-NR.

TurboTax does not support the Form 1040NR. You will need to use Sprintax to file a Form 1040-NR.  If you have questions you can contact Sprintax Help for assistance.

You will need to complete the Form 1040-X manually as the TurboTax software does not support the change in tax forms.

After you mail in the return, wait for about 3 weeks before you go the IRS website Where's My Amended Return? to check on the status of your return.
