The IRS has reintroduced Form 1099-NEC as the new way to report self-employment income instead of Form 1099-MISC. This was done to help clarify the separate filing deadlines on Form 1099-MISC.  The new 1099-NEC form will be used starting with the 2020 tax year.

In TurboTax Self-Employed you will post this under:

  • Income & Expenses
  • Self-Employment Income & Expenses
  • If you've already started entering the business you will select REVIEW
  • Select Add income for this work
  • Under Common Income
  • Select Form 1099-NEC

What if it is for Renewable Energy Credits and not self employment?

In this case, this is how to enter it.

  • Wages & Income
  • 1099 MISC and Other Common Income
  • Select Income from a 1099-NEC
  • Enter payer's name
  • EIN Number
  • Amount you received
  • State what it was for
  • Click None of these apply
  • No you do not have expenses to enter

If your return does not include a Schedule C, then TurboTax is trying to get you to fix, this issue and you will need to enter the 10990NEC under the Schedule C.

Any income reported on Form 1099-NEC is not reportable directly on your tax return. Since this type of income is considered self-employment (non-employee compensation) it must be linked to a Schedule C, even if there are no expenses being claimed.

To add a Schedule C so your 1099-NEC can be linked:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax
  2. In the Search box type schedule c and click the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Answer Yes to Did you have any self-employment income or expenses?
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions.

@epurbanski

The information required for the Schedule C will include the type of business, the business name (or your name if there is no specific business name), the business address (or your address), etc
