When doing taxes (married filing jointly) for tax year 2025, each spouse has individual HDHP. The wife is employed for 8 months and contributes $2866 to her HSA. The husband is employed all year, contributes $4300 to his HSA. In May 2025, they have a dependent child and husband changes his HDHP to family coverage. What is the max contribution that is allowed for them in 2025? Cannot use last-month rule as husband will not be able to continue coverage till Dec 2026. Please advise, thanks!

When you go to the HSA section in the "Deductions and Credits" section of your federal tax return you will need to enter how much was contributed. The amount from your W2 will be carried over and the additional contribution is entered just below that.
The next screen has three choices - select the third choice that you had "different coverage at different times of the year" and then when you get to the next screen you will enter your monthly coverage throughout 2025 and spread your contributions across that monthly limit.
