I stumbled upon something that gave me the option. I wish I could remember what, but it just happened. Almost, as if, by magic.
The way to upgrade from Free File website to a paid version is listed several times in this thread.
Last year one user posted this. It works for 2020 too.....
I found this message thread because I was searching for an answer on how to do this. I finally found it and wanted to post it in case others find it too.
1. Go to https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/compare/online/
2. Click "help me choose"
3. Select the options that apply to your situation
4. Click "start for free" of whatever product you want to use when it gives you the suggestions
After that, it asked how I did my taxes last year. I selected Turbo Tax, then it had me sign in. Once I was signed in, it asked if I was sure I wanted to change to a commercial product and not use the free file program. I selected yes, clicked ok, and I was back into the normal system and out of the free file system.
This ALMOST works. It will only let me switch to the most expensive live advice version.

I'm not sure exactly what you were responding to, but did you follow the full steps that I've outlined lower down in this posting? Some of these old very long threads cluttered with multiple users have old outdated info in them.
It may be moot now if you are already in another paid product. If you ended up in the wrong paid edition, you can remove the Live feature. We can tell you how to remove the Live portion.

And/or if you are in a higher edition than you wanted, you may be able to downgrade to a lower edition, but you would have to clear your return and start over to do that.
If you're already back in a paid edition, the steps below won't help you now, but may help someone else, so I'll go ahead and list them. I had posted them higher up in this thread, but you may not have read the whole thread.. Many users in multiple threads on this issue have followed these steps and returned to a regular Online paid edition of their choice, or even returned to regular Free Edition, in the same account without starting over.
If you've been using TurboTax IRS Free File Program at its special website to prepare your 2020 return and don't qualify, and now want to go back to a paid edition of TurboTax at the Online TurboTax website to finish and file your return in the same account without starting over, here's how:

Using above link and changing the addition you will upgrade absolutely worked for me! Thanks a million for reposting this!
