So my oldest turned 18 last year.
TurboTax keeps telling the IRS that he is eligible for Child Tax Credit on the submission and it's failing to be accepted.
Looks like the 18 yr old should not be checking the box for Child Tax Credit and instead, be using "Credit for other dependents" but I can't make it do that anywhere in the TurboTax program and it's not doing it for me with an 18-year-old child.
I am on hold with TurboTax folks as well.
Description of error:
Each dependent in 'DependentDetail' on the return with 'EligibleForChildTaxCreditInd' checked must be under the age of 17. You may be eligible to claim the "Credit for other dependents" if you meet the requirements for the credit.
What needs to be done:
Review information that has been entered for each of your dependents. -Verify that the dependent's Name and Social Security Number have been entered correctly. -Verify that the dependent's date of birth is accurate. -Verify the Relationship entered is SON, DAUGHTER, GRANDCHILD, SISTER, BROTHER, NIECE, NEPHEW, FOSTER CHILD, STEPCHILD, STEPBROTHER, STEPSISTER, HALF BROTHER, or HALF SISTER. If after reviewing dependent information, you feel this message was received in error, contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 800-772-1213 to verify that their records are accurate. If SSA records need to be corrected, it can take up to four weeks to transfer the updated information to the IRS. Please wait four weeks and then re-file the return.
If the reject continues, or if you do not want to wait four weeks to re-file electronically, you may print and file by mail.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
This is a little simplistic but have you verified their date of birth in the My Info section of the online program or the Personal Info section of the desktop program.?
If they were age 18 in 2022 then their year of birth would have to be 2004.
Multiple times.
I had to remove the 18-yo child and re-add him - something snafu'ed on the import from last year's children.
Looks like that worked as I submitted it and waiting for the rejection or acceptance.
