How can people only on ssi recieve a stimulis check

If you don't file a tax return because your income is low and/or your only income is SSI or SSDI or veterans benefits, you are still eligible for the COVID-19 stimulus payment. If you receive SSDI, you don't have to do anything; the government will send you your check automatically. But if you receive only SSI and you didn't file a tax return for 2018 income or 2019 income, you'll have to take steps to ensure the government can find you and pay you.

Those who don't normally file tax returns will have to file a tax return at some point to get the stimulus money (except for Social Security disability recipients). This includes veterans who receive disability compensation or pension and SSI recipients who don't receive any SSDI.

The IRS is expected to release more information soon for veterans and SSI recipients about how to file a simplified tax return for the purpose of getting the stimulus rebate. In the meantime, TurboTax has partnered with the IRS to help individuals like SSI recipients and veterans register for the stimulus payment. You'll need to create an account with TurboTax at its stimulus registration page, but it's free. Once you're logged in, you'll answer a few questions so that TurboTax can determine your filing status, your mailing address, and your direct deposit banking information, if applicable.

Yes, Social Security recipients and railroad retirees who are otherwise not required to file a tax return are also eligible and will not be required to file a return."  You don't have to do anything to get your stimulus money, it will automatically be deposited into your bank account that is on file with the Social Security office.

@SusanY1 - here is the comment from the IRS website:

I am not typically required to file a tax return. Can I still receive my payment?

Yes. The IRS will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099 to generate Economic Impact Payments to recipients of benefits reflected in the Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099 who are not required to file a tax return and did not file a return for 2018 or 2019. This includes senior citizens, Social Security recipients and railroad retirees who are not otherwise required to file a tax return.

@NCperson

If referring to SSI - Supplemental Security Income -  this is different from regular social security, and there is no 1099-SSA and this does not apply.

For SSI - Supplemental Security Income we do not yet have final guidance on what steps will need to be taken to receive the money.
