When I go to "foreign taxes" in the credit section and try to update the amount from 0, I get a series of questions which I answered. I am then taken back to the original page and have not been able to enter the amount of foreign taxes paid from my NR4 form. How can I enter this amount?

@user17705019283 , from your post it seems to me that it is your answers to the questions ( which I find to be quite confusing at a first glance ) that is allowing TurboTax to "assume" that you have nothing to declare as FT. To investigate this further, will you please answer the following ( and any additional info that you think may be useful :(
(a) you a US person ( citizen/GreenCard/ Resident for Tax purposes ) --?
(b) what was the NR4 income/tax withholding statement for ( pension -- what type , passive income like interest/dividend/ capital gains etc. ) ?
(c) this income was received in calendar year 2025 ?
(d) Is this your first year with this income and/or issue ? If you had an NR-4 last year, did you also have an issue then or is it just showing up this year only ?
I will circle back once I hear from you --yes ?
a) yes
b) passive div income code 9
c) yes
d) not my first year and I did not have this problem last year
I paid $649.04 in Canadian taxes in 2025.
@user17705019283 thank you for your prompt response to my questions. Give me a little time to create the situation on my copy of TurboTax ( desktop ) and see how it behaves -- seems a simple case and so I am surprised . I will be back
Thank you.
@user17705019283 , I created your situation -- US person, single, W-2 income ( with federal, state and FICA withholdings ) and a foreign ( Canada ) dividend income with FTC paid. I took care to enter the dividend income ( i.e. no import ) and foreign taxes paid (from relevant boxes of NR-4 -- box 16 and 17 ) in US$. Note that the dividend income entered was as if I had a 1099-DIV but did not enter any Foreign Taxes Paid in that area. Then while working on " Credits and Deductions " Tab, "I will choose what I work on", chose "Foreign Taxes ". Here I entered the foreign income again and the taxes paid to Canada --- this is a bit confusing but persistence paid off. The result was that form 1116 was correctly filled out -- make sure you choose " Passive Income" -- Turbo default is general category.
It does work as expected. I confirmed by going into forms mode and checked all the forms and entries therein.
I did not ask/ enter any tax treaty assertions for this dividend income and the resulting FTC.
If you need more on this , please feel welcome to either add to this thread or PM me ( just NO PII -- Personally Identifiable Information ).
