For some reason with a negative effective gross income I have taxes due, is this possibly correct?

Did you have any self-employment income? This could trigger the self-employment tax.  You can look at Schedule 2 line 4 if you had self-employment tax. Also, you can see on Schedule 2 if you had any other tax added.

To preview your 1040/ Schedule 2:

1. Click on "Tax Tools" in the left menu
2. Click "Tools"
3. Click "View Tax Summary" in the Tool Center window
4. Click on "Preview my 1040" on the left
5. Scroll down to "Schedule 2 Additional Taxes"
