I am married filing jointly. Our taxable income for the year is 101,712. Turbo tax is saying that we owe 8,602,706 in additional medicare tax, a tax that I believe we make less than the threshhold amount to pay regardless, much less paying 8x more than our income . I am not sure how it is coming up with this number, or how to correct for filing.

I am going to take a guess here but it sounds like you entered the figure for your income incorrectly. Go back and check what you entered. Did you add extra digits? Is the decimal in the proper place or is it missing altogether. If the program has the wrong data entered, it is going to return incorrect figures
Yes, calculations that far from a realistic number suggests that there was a problem with an input somewhere along the way. The best suggestion for what to do next is to follow the advice of user brenele and revisit your income items to check the accuracy of the inputs.
If you do not find something that was input that is causing this tax calculation, give another update here and someone will try to walk you through some other steps to try.
Also, if nothing seems out of place, clearing and starting over is always an option.
I went back through all of the income, and as far as I can tell, all of the figures were entered correctly, but am still getting the incorrect amount owed for federal.
You are correct. Based on your income and filing status you should not owe additional medicare tax on your return.
If you could try one last thing that may be helpful. In your situation, you should first clear your cache and cookies. It handles many issues that seem nonsensical on a regular basis.
Watch to be sure you are selecting 'all time' as example. Do not use selections like 'last hour' for those browsers that give you options.
Topic 960: Additional Medicare Tax
A 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax applies to Medicare wages, self-employment income, and railroad retirement (RRTA) compensation that exceed the following threshold amounts based on filing status: $250,000 for married filing jointly; $125,000 for married filing separately; and. $200,000 for all other taxpayers.
You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:
TurboTax Online:
Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.
TurboTax CD/Download:
If you like, you can send a copy of your return that will be scrubbed to eliminate your personal data by using these steps:
We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.
