Error in Schedule C

I have an error in Schedule C that I cannot get rid of. I have three lines that appear to be blank, with zeros in the dollar amounts. This has carried over for several years. I cannot get rid of it. The error says that "Other Expense Text is invalid. Please remove all preceding spaces or invalid characters". I have hit the delete key and the backspace key repeatedly in those blank description lines, and tried to delete the zeros. No dice. I have three errors, on three separate lines.

Error in Schedule C

This is in Part V "other expenses", in the Olympic and Paralympic Prize Money Smart Worksheet. I have never been in the Olympics or Paralympics.

It could be a worksheet associated with your Schedule C. You can view your Schedule C worksheets and delete the ones that may have been added accidentally.

Please be careful because deleting a worksheet is permanent.

Here's an article that will show you how to view and delete forms.

How do I delete a tax form in the TurboTax CD/Download software?

Error in Schedule C

Please help.  I am getting an error message on Schedule C, Part V, Olympic and Paralympic Smart Worksheet.  the amount is 0.00 but the description line is highlighted in yellow.  I have deleted anything that could possibly be there about 10 times, resaved the form and can't find anything that will get rid of the error message.  There is nothing there.  It is on a  Schedule C for a Dental practice.  There has never been anything there in the past........

I AM FRUSTRATED!!!!!!   I can't delete the Schedule C because it is legitimate.

PLEASE HELP SOMEBODY!!!  I HAVE SEEN THIS SAME MESSAGE TIME AND TIME AGAIN AND THERE IS NO SOLUTION LISTED!!!!

Error in Schedule C

You may be getting this error if you have a 1099-MISC on your return, with an amount in Box 3 - Other Income, and the Olympic or Paralympic prize money box was marked in error.

Please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Search 1099-MISC for the magnifying glass tool.
  3. Select the Jump to 1099-MISC link at the top of the results.
  4. Edit your 1099-MISC.
  5. Continue past the amounts entered.
  6. On the page Does one of these uncommon situations apply?, please ensure that you select None of these apply and not the option above, which is This was money from Olympic or Paralympic prize money. I have attached a picture below for additional guidance.
  7. Click continue.

This should clear your Schedule C error. If it does not, please comment below and we can assist you further.

Error in Schedule C

UPDATE - as stubborn as I am I decided to delete and reenter the expenses for a third time, hoping for a different outcome, and it worked.

I also have an Invalid text error in Schedule C 'Other Miscellaneous Expenses'. These are NOT 1099-MISC related items

I have 3 entries in the OTHER. when the third entry is made the fourth line highlights and this is where the error appears.

If I delete all entries and start over the last line always errors out.

I do NOT like submitting incomplete/errored forms. I tried everything that you mention but cannot get to the Uncommon Situations that you refer to. I do not have any 1099- MISC

Error in Schedule C

If your adjusted gross income is not more than $1,000,000 ($500,000 if married filing separately), the value of Olympic and Paralympic medals and United States Olympic Committee (USOC) prize money you receive are non-taxable.  While such amounts are non-taxable, the value of the medals and prize money will appear on line 8l of Schedule 1 to the Form 1040; however, the Form 1040 will reflect that the income is non-taxable.

Here are the steps to follow when entering your Paralympic prize money.  These steps assume you received a 1099-Misc in connection with your Paralympic prize money.  If you did not receive a 1099-Misc, contact the Committee that sponsored the event because you will need their federal ID number when responding to questions in TurboTax.

  1. After signing in to TurboTax, enter "1099 Misc" in the search bar (upper right side of the page)
  2. You will see 1099-Misc appear in the list of searches, click on it, then click on the jump to link.
  3. Now you should be on a page where you can enter information about your 1099-Misc.
  4. Click Continue to move through the application.
  5. On the page "Does one of these uncommon situations apply,?" click on the entry relating to Olympic/Paralympic prize money.
  6. You will then see a link to a page to learn more about excluding this type of income from tax.  Disregard it, and just continue through the application.
  7. At the end of this section, click Done.

After you have completed your entries, review your Form 1040 to ensure the Paralympic prize money has not been taxed.  If you are using TurboTax Online, here are the steps to follow to preview your Form 1040:

         1. Open or continue your return.

         2. Select Tax Tools in the left menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner).

         3. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:

             a. View only your 1040 form: Select Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my                                     1040 in the left menu.

Error in Schedule C

You need to delete the form and re-enter it to be sure it is correctly "attached" to your Schedule C information.

To do this in TurboTax Online you can follow these steps:

  1. Within your return, click on Tax Tools in the black menu on the left side of the screen.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Click on Delete a Form
  4. Scroll down to your Form 1099-K and click Delete.
  5. Under Federal in the black menu bar click Wages & Income to get back into your tax returns.

To re-enter your 1099-K in TurboTax Online you can follow these steps:

  1. Open or continue your return
  2. Search for Schedule C and select the Jump to link in the search results
  3. Answer the questions about your business. On the Let's enter the income for your work screen, select Other self-employed income
    • If you’re returning to Schedule C, select Review or Edit next to your work and then answer the questions about your business
  4. On the Tell us about other self-employed income for your work screen, enter your 1099-K info
  5. Select Continue when finished

When you are entering income from a 1099-K, remember that it reports the gross amount of the transactions. It doesn't include any adjustments for credits, refunds, discounts, or fees. You’ll have a chance to enter self-employment expenses in another part of your return.

Error in Schedule C

Schedule C Line 48 with supporting data from past year cannot be edited or deleted, entries are shifted up to a blank line... Very Confusing.  There is no entry in the Oly/Paralympic Smart Sheet.  I need access to data to correct entries for "Part V, Other Entries" to clarify data entered on line 48. This is clearly an error in Intuits programing. Please point me, and I'm sure others to a more comforting space. Thank You

Error in Schedule C

This line is "Other expenses", which means you have to enter a description and a number. Errors here are common because the description will carry forward from the prior year and the program will insist on a figure for each description.

  1. Select Federal from the left side menu, then Wages & Income.
  2. Click Review to the right of Self-employment income and expenses.
  3. Click Review again toward the bottom of the screen.
  4. Click Edit to the right of Other miscellaneous expenses.
  5. You will see a list of descriptions and the expense amounts, delete any incomplete entries by clicking the little trash can to the right of the entry.
  6. When all incomplete entries are deleted, click Continue to save your change.
  7. Click Federal Review on the left side menu to verify this has fixed the issue.

Error in Schedule C

When you enter the numbers into schedule C you have to be careful not to type any spaces or periods or anything in there.  The system reads every entry as a number and those spaces and other characters can't be added up.  So you need to go through every entry you made into the schedule C and be sure that you haven't entered anything but numbers into the blanks.
