Box 17 State

 I live in NJ and work in NY, box 17 on my W2 has a State Income Tax number, and box 15 says TOTAL STATE. Which state are the taxes in box 17 paid to? Where I live or where I work?

As you probably know, you pay taxes to the state where you live and to the state(s) where you work. So it could be either one.

In this case, box 17 has the amount of tax money that was sent to a state. Box 15 identifies which state.

If box 15 says "TOTAL STATE", then TurboTax has no way of knowing which state.

Contact your HR/payroll people and ask them which state they are talking about - we at TurboTax have no way of knowing which state your employer sent the money to.
