Box 16

There is no Box 16 on 2 1099Rs that I have received and two additional 1099Rs (from the same provider) have no amounts in box 16.

Box 16

Box 16 is the state amount of the distribution.  In most cases it is the same as Box 1 - gross distribution.   If there is an entry in Boxes 14 or 15 on your 1099-R, TurboTax will expect an amount in Box 16.

Enter the following in Box 16:

  • If Box 14 shows State Tax withheld, enter the amount in Box 1 (gross distribution);
  • If Box 14 is blank or zero no state tax was withheld leave Boxes 14, 15 and 16 blank.

Box 16

Hello

When box 16 is empty, should I use amount shown in box 1 or 2A?

Thanks.

Box 2a is the taxable amount that would be part of your state income.

When entering my states tax withheld, I get a message that :

"State income withheld must be smaller than your state distribution." What does that mean? I do not have a state distribution on my 1099R.

You should enter the full amount as the state distribution in box 16 when entering your Form 1099-R since you do have state withholding.  Use the federal taxable amount for your state distribution amount.  Sometimes the payers do not enter the amount on the form.
