Why does Intuit say TT is available to download around Thanksgiving, charges my credit card immediately but delivers what is essentially last year's version that is basically useless until updates and forms are released as late as April? Great for Intuit cash flow but a scam for users?

They do it because of competitive pressure. All the other tax software companies do the same thing. If Intuit didn't offer an early preliminary version, all the people who are in a big hurry to start working on their tax returns would go to one of the other companies.
Sorry...that does not make ANY sense!
I think you are saying they want to increase their cash flow "for competitive reasons" by providing software that essentially useless until they finish updating TT for the current tax year? Changing the year on the forms is easy...there were VERY few tax law changes for 2021. I "get it" if IRS would not release a form but why did I see so many updates when NO forms were updated?
I am going to stop my "subscription" to TT and either purchase it (or a competitor's) closer to tax filing season. That seems to make sense for my cash flow instead of Intuit's!
I must repeat my 2021 comment for the 2023 tax year!
There is no doubt charging "subscribers" for the year's TT around Thanksgiving is good for Intuit's cash flow (although the company's stock price does not seem to appreciate the idea) but it does little for the people who purchase what is essentially "last year's" software with new dates on the forms. The package has little use until the "blizzard" of updates begin at the end of the year.
My recommendation, buy it on Amazon at a lower price late in the year or switch to one of the other tax applications.
