Amended Return - Mail Paper to IRS Questions

Hi.

I have some questions about Amended Return. Let's say I forgot to add form 8949 and Schedule D. I want to amended a return and add those 2 forms and "MAIL" to the IRS. I like to know do I have to attach a whole corrected 1040 forms with all schedules including with the new attached forms 8949 and Schedule D? Or, I just attach forms 8949 and Schedule D behind 1040X and mail to the IRS?

The latter. You would only mail in Form 1040-X and the forms/schedule's that include the adjustments made on the 1040-X.

You can now e-file Amended returns to the IRS.

  • Beginning with the 2019 tax years, amended federal returns are able to be electronically filed as long as you electronically filed the original return.
  • If you filed your return with TurboTax, log into your account and select the tax return that you want to amend and follow the online instructions.

"

@megank1   Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return."

You have to inspect your new tax return for any other forms or schedules that changed.

TurboTax won't break those out for you.

It may be simpler and more effective to print out the main forms and schedules from your original return and amended return and submit them with the form 1040-X. Staple the original return together and write "Original Return" in bold letters on it and do the same for the corrected return and write "Corrected Return" on it. That way the person who is processing the amended return may find it easier to understand what you are doing.
