Amended Return 2020

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY - I ASKED THIS QUESTION EARLIER TODAY AND THE PERSON WHO ANSWERED DID NOT ANSWER IT AT ALL.

I had to amend my 2020 taxes and before I amended I was owed a refund from both Fed and State and I have received both refunds already; however after amending, I now OWE both Federal and State money.

My question:  Do I include the amount I  received as refunds  from both Federal and State along with the amount I now owe?  I don't know what the process is for "paying back" what I received. I e-filed the Federal and arranged for auto pay for ONLY the amount I owe (I did not include the amount IRS paid me). How do I "pay back" IRA and State what they just paid me? Do I include it with the payment of what I now owe?

Thank you.

Amended Return 2020

We do not have access to your actual return, so I am unaware of which state return you are amending.  So, I will explain to you the way the federal 1040X works and some general notes on how a state return may be amended.

TurboTax will guide you through the Amended return process for the federal and the state returns.

Yes, the IRS form 1040X should take into consideration for calculation purposes, the amount of refund you received from the original filed federal return on the front of the Form 1040X.

You are not stating the reason for amending your federal and state return, but if you owe money back, then is the reason because you omitted income received on the original return or overstated taxes withheld or estimated taxes paid in or lost dependents?

Either way, the way that the Federal 1040X works is that column A is the original return filed, column C is the corrected return column and then the software calculates the differences into column B.

Near the bottom of page 1 of Form 1040X:

  • line 16 is the total amount paid with return, with extension, or additional amount paid after filing.
  • line 17 is the total payments paid in  from lines 12-15 in column C and line 16
  • line 18 is the overpayment from the original return filed or as adjusted by IRS
  • line 19 is line 18 from line 17
  • line 20 is the amount you owe with the amended return.  If line 11 col C is greater than line 19, enter the difference
  • line 21 is if the line 11 Col C amount is less than line 19, enter the difference - amount overpaid
  • line 22 the amount of line 21 to be refunded
  • line 23 is the amount of line 21 to be applied to another year estimated taxes

Generally, if you owe money with your original return, you are supposed to pay it before filing an amended return.  If you are expecting a refund, then it is assumed you are supposed to receive it before filing an amended return.

Line 20 would state the amount you owe to the IRS with the amended return which does take into consideration the original refund received.  That is the amount to send to IRS.

The state amendment should be similar to the federal, depending on the state in question.  Some states have a specific amended form similar to the Form 1040X at IRS and some states just have you file a "corrected" return on the same form as the original return is filed on with maybe an adjustment section or maybe not.  It will depend on how the state provides for an amended return.
