A common problem is that taxpayers with multiple last names (especially Hispanic taxpayers) is that the taxpayer considered one name to be the last name while the Social Security Administration (SSA) (and by extension the IRS) thinks that the other name is the last name.

You can test this by changing your last name on the tax return to the other "last name" and trying to e-file again.

You can try visiting the local tax office (if one) (see https://www.irs.com/articles/contact-the-irs) to ask what they think your name and SSN are (bring plenty of ID).

Alternatively, if nothing helps, you will have to print and mail your return, because even if you discover that the IRS has the wrong last name or SS number, they won't fix it any time soon.

For years my wife has had a long running battle over names between the black hole combination of (a) Social Security, (b) the IRS, (c) the Turbo Tax software and (d) e-filing through TTax.

Each  year we try e-filing bunch of different ways...and still end having to file by mail.  This year TTax solved solved one issue it had for years...it now allows a space in a two word last name.  Unfortunately that did not resolve the name-and-efiling problem.

According to Social Security my wife's name has the form  Alpha B Charlie Delta. The B is the first initial of her second name (i.e., maiden middle name). My last name is also Delta (we are married filing jointly). This isn't really all that weird, if not exactly plain vanilla.

Once again this year we have been unable to find a form that the IRS e-filing system does not immediately reject. At least this year the IRS has sent the rejection email (and notification to TTax) within 15 min.  Helps me try, try again.

The forms of her names we tried this year from within TTax include:

first name            MI       Last Name

Alpha                   B         Delta

Alpha                   C        Delta

Alpha                   B        Charlie Delta

Alpha B               C        Delta

Alpha B                          Charlie Delta

The good news is we have always been able to print-and-snail-mail with no problem.  We use the recommended "print to PDF and then print" method. Years when we owe taxes the IRS withdraws the payment (via check) within 2 days of mailing.  Refunds of course take a lot longer.

Sigh.  Any suggestions for next  year (TY 2020) are most welcome.
