2019 tax return rejected - 8801 form update

E-filed the federal tax return yesterday and today it was rejected. TT is saying that 8801 is being reviewed for updates and I need to wait for one week. If 8801 was pending updates, why did TT let me e-file? IRS doesn’t mention any recent updates to this form. So something doesn’t look right in TT’s explanation. Has anyone else experienced the same and do you have any more information on this?

The corrected Form 8801 is expected to be release later today (Release 20). You need to check on it this weekend.

You should delete the form in your return. When a corrected form is updated it is possible for some old calculations is still in the form. Deleting the form will allow only the corrected form to be loaded.

To delete a form off of your return you need to:

    1. Select Tax Forms in the Black bar on the left side of the screen.
    2. Select Tools from the drop down menu.
    3. On the Tools Center Select Delete a form.
    4. Locate the form on the list and select Delete.
    5. You will be asked to confirm the deletion.

I filed my federal and state tax returns this afternoon. An hour later they were rejected. TT sent me an email saying, "We are reviewing updates to Form 8801 Credit for Prior Year Minimum Tax. We expect to have the form released by approximately March 5th, 2020."

That’s what annoys me. If TT is working on an update, why did they let e-file go through? This is ridiculous.

As mentioned above, the issue is being looked into and a resolution is expected by March 5.

Yes!  I received the same thing.  Best part is when I log into my Turbo Tax account now, it says it can't find my file.  When I call the 1-800 # I can't get past the menu.  She won't recognize me.  Is there even such a thing as real live help from Turbo Tax anymore?  Did you speak with someone?

I had a different issue earlier this year - my TT desktop started crashing upon launch after 02/12 update. This got fixed after next round of updates. The TT people who helped the most were on Twitter - i messaged Twitter Support and they were responsive and tried to help.

I had the exact same issue. First, the status was rejected and then it says pending for both  Federal and State. I can't get an answer whether this revision will reduce my credit. I don't know\w what to do.

I had the same error.  Phone support was really no help.   I got an update today.  Not sure this fixes the problem. My refund did not change. What am I supposed to do now?   Resubmit?      Turbotax did not walk me through any change.    Very confusing.

I updated my TT and refiled again today, it was rejected again in less than an hour.

You are not alone, the same happened with me just now, seems like promised update doesn't work

I use the dowloaded version of TT from CD on my Macbook (not the online version).

Today when I logged into TT, I was prompted to do a software update.

I went though all of the income, deductions and other credit sections of my return just to verify that none of the numbers changed.  I verified that all of the original information on Form 8801 and 6251 did not change (which it didn't). Line 25 on 8801 was calculated correctly and the original tax refund calculated did not change.  The only change to form 8801 was the revised date at the bottom of the page from 2/14/20 to 3/2/20.

However I'm still hesitant to file electronically (efile) until some people confirm that their returns were accepted ok the first time that they were submitted.

So far it was reported that some people have had their original rejected returns accepted and others haven't had any success yet.

So I'm just going to wait awhile to see if there are any further issues.

@Allan M I went through each of the AMT questions for 8801, resubmitted, and received a quick rejection. On the second try I deleted the old form, and reentered all of the information before resubmitting. Less than 90 minutes later my return was accepted.

Yesterday after getting the rejection notice with this error, I logged in and went through the flow again (with no changes), assuming that it was updated since it was March 5. But today it got rejected with the same error again. When I log in to turbotax it says "We are reviewing updates to Form 8801 Credit for Prior Year Minimum Tax. We expect to have the form update released by approximately March 5th, 2020." and there is a "Fix it now" button. (Same as yesterday.) This is rather confusing and misleading language, but I'm going to assume it means the updates aren't actually released yet and wait to see if something changes next week... It would be nice if they gave some more concrete and specific information!

I got rejected once and followed the instruction to file again after re-typing the same info for amt on 3/5. Got rejected again this morning (after about 15 hours). I didn't see any 8801 form update, the rev date is still 03/02 at the bottom. It's very confusing.

Strange, my return was also accepted on the 3rd try. For both 2nd and 3rd try I did the same thing just clicking through the AMT credit section again.

I’m getting the same message! it’s a TT issue. NOT an IRS updating form issue because I called IRS. It says approximately March 5th it should be updated, however I did mine yesterday and it was rejected TWICE now. It would be nice if they would tell us when it’s ready to actually be filed instead of waisting everyone’s time. I’m not impressed with TT.

    Dear all,

I installed the updates this morning. Then went through the AMT credit again, checked for errors and e-filed the second time. In 30 min of second e-file, the federal tax return was accepted.

No change to the form, no change in the entries - nothing.

It was clearly a TT glitch that was resolved with their system update. TT is unnecessarily blaming IRS 8801 form - this form has had no updates in 2020. https://apps.irs.gov/app/picklist/list/priorFormPublication.html?resultsPerPage=200&sortColumn=sortOrder&indexOfFirstRow=0&criteria=formNumber&value=8801&isDescending=false

Thanks to all those who responded to confirm this as a system wide issue. Good to all getting through the tax returns this year. TT has a lot of bugs this year and the staff is clueless.

Like previous posters, I tried to file my returns earlier this week, which were rejected because

of form 8801. I updated TurboTax this morning, but because I did not see any change, I did not

submit my return. Instead, I called TurboTax support which was worthless and tried to blame the

8801 issue on the IRS. Later this afternoon, after reading the posts on this board, I went through form

8801 again and resubmitted. The Federal return was accepted within 40 minutes. This is the second year

in a row that TurboTax has bugs (last year, it did not keep track properly of estimated taxes paid during the

year and I wasted an entire day to get around this problem-- again the phone support was worthless).

TurboTax has some nice features, like downloading 1099s, but  if these problems keep occurring, I will need to consider switching to TaxAct.

For those who have had their federal returns accepted, I'd check again once TurboTax fixes the 8801 form.  I entered exactly the same info into TaxAct and my Credit for Prior year AMT increased by $1,283 and my overall federal and state refund amount increased by $992.

I'm going to hold off resubmitting for a few days.
