1042-s

I am a post-doctoral fellow and I received the 1042-s form (income code 23, exemption code 4a: 15). How should I report this using turbotax? Do I need to mail this form to IRS?

Thank you,

Anna

To clarify., are you a resident or non-resident alien?

To clarify again, is there income reported in Box 6 and withholding in Box 7A?

There is nothing reported in box 6.  The gross income is reported in box 2, tax rate in box 3b, exemption code (15) in box 4a and the withheld in box 7a. The income code is 23.

Thank you.

The income code (23) is 'other income' and then you have federal withholding to report. Both can be added to your return using the following steps.

Because you are a resident alien and you have received a form 1042S where you report the income depends on the income code and why the form was generated.

1-This income can be entered as miscellaneous income.  When you sign into your TurboTax account you can follow the steps below.

  1. Select the "Federal" tab in the black navigation bar on the left
  2. Select "Income & Expenses"
  3. Scroll and click "See the list of all income"
  4. Scroll to "Less Common Income" and select "show more"
  5. Select "Miscellaneous Income"
  6. Scroll and select "Other Reportable Income"
  7. Click "yes" then enter the description and amount (this will show up on line 21, Form 1040)

2-Enter the federal and/or state withholding here:

  • Deductions and credits > Other income taxes > Yes > Other income taxes paid in 2021 > Withholding not already entered on a W2 or 1099
  • Continue to enter your withholding

You should file your return by mail to the Form 1042S can be attached.

Thank you very much, you were very helpful. I said that I have to MAIL the 1042s form together with the 1040 form.  I live in Texas, to which address should I send the documents?

Thank you,

Anna
