I know 4 people that went in a shared a turbo tax program this year - 2 single with no dependents, 1 single with 1 child and 1 signal with 2 children. All 4 file the simplest form. The 2 with no dependents have received their refunds. The 2 with dependents received letters stating the IRS is reviewing their claim. The only had their W's, and what credit they were eligible for having low income and minor child(ren). What is up with this. Filed no different this year then they did last year except the 1 had 3 children they claimed last year and 2 this year.

Everyone's tax situation is different and there is more involved in the calculation of your taxes than the number of dependents you have - a lot more. For the returns on hold, there are many many reasons why the IRS would review a tax return. Unfortunately, since the IRS is closed due to the COVID situation, folks with pending returns will need to wait until they resume operations. Hopefully, that will be soon.
They select some returns to examine so they can determine whether income, expenses, and credits are reported correctly. This doesn’t mean you made an error or were dishonest.
IRS live telephone assistance is currently unavailable due to COVID-19. Normal operations will resume when possible. Tax help is available 24 hours a day on IRS.gov. The IRS website offers a variety of online tools to help taxpayers answer common tax questions. For example, taxpayers can search the Interactive Tax Assistant, Tax Topics, Frequently Asked Questions, and Tax Trails to get answers to common questions. Those who have already filed can check their refund status by visiting IRS.gov/Refunds.
