Possible Bug? My 1099-B was imported and all information is there. Yet I still get an error after review to enter a date for stock purchased.

BeachBodyStock2.JPGI keep getting the error above.  I am getting this message when I try to finish my taxes and it takes me back to this 1099-B.  Now, I double checked all the entries on my form and what was imported.  It is all there.   To make matters worse, whenever it takes me to this page, it freezes up for a minute before it gives me the ability to enter a date.  I even tried entering the date and after I did that, it froze again.  Only to take me right back to the screen as if I didn't enter anything.  Please help. I'm ready to submit my taxes and now I'm stuck.  The message below shows the second entry for the stock, which had "various" purchase dates. BeachBodyStock.JPG

Don't use 'various' for Date Acquired; TurboTax needs to determine if Long-Term or Short-Term, so an actual date is needed.

You can use an 'average' date to enter here if your broker info doesn't have a date.

If this doesn't resolve your issue and you're using TurboTax Online, try deleting your imported transactions, closing the program,  clear your Cache and Cookies and importing again.

Your 'freezing' issue may have something hung up that's not clearing properly.

An alternative is to enter a summary of your transactions.

Thank you for the assistance Marilyn.  I've imported my 1099-B from TDAmeritrade this way for the last 3 years.  I've had transactions with "various" purchase dates multiple times with no issue.  There are also many other sales with "various" purchase dates on my 1099 but they did not generate this error.  Not to mention when I go back to look at the form it does indeed show as short term or long term so I don't think that is the issue.

One thing I also wanted to note, is that even after the delay of the document loading, I've tried entering a date.  And once I hit continue, it acts like its loading, and then takes me right back to the menu with the date field blank as if I never entered anything.   This is why my original hunch is that this is a bug in the software.

Nonetheless, I'll first try your suggestion of deleting it and then importing it again.

FYI, I deleted and then imported again.  Still the same issue.  I may just have to do the summary of the transactions.  Nonetheless I hope they remedy this issue.

Yes, you could just report the summary on Schedule D provided that the cost basis for the securities in question was reported to the IRS (i.e. it was a covered transaction). Your 1099-B will reflect if these securities were covered on noncovered.  Another option would be to try to delete the Worksheet as it is not sent to the IRS.  Form 8949 Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets and Schedule D are sent to the IRS, but the Worksheets remain with you for your records.  To delete a form using TurboTax online, follow these steps.

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  4. Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.
