Thanks. Turns out - there is a checkbox that needs to be filled in for the NJ-CBT-1065. Unfortunately, the form TurboTax brings up is not the one that needs to be fixed. It is actually on a different form. Took one of their tax experts a while to find it but he stayed with it and, eventually, identified the correct form to fix.
I appreciate Dan's effort - he was just as confused about what was wrong as I was and had to ask a third person who pointed us in the right direction.
It depends. There may be several reasons for this but i do have a few suggestions you may try. The problem may be that the information is recorded on your federal return did not populate to the state return.
If the partnership return asks for authorization information, it may refer to identifying the person who is filing or submitting the return on behalf of the partnership. This could be a partner or someone else with authority to sign on behalf of the partnership (like a tax preparer or manager).
The authorized person or signature authority will generally be the person responsible for signing the return (the Managing Partner or General Partner).
On the NJ-1065 form, you'll typically have fields asking for the name, title, and contact information of the person responsible for the return.
In the NJ-1065 form itself, you’ll see sections for:
In the NJ Division of Taxation's online portal (if you're filing electronically), you may be asked to enter the contact information and EIN when prompted, usually in the first sections of the filing process. Check for a specific step where the system asks for the filing representative or taxpayer information.
To enter the authenticity/authorization information for your New Jersey partnership return, you'll need to make sure the EIN and any representative details are correctly filled out in the Partnership Information and Signature sections of the NJ-1065 form. If you're using online filing, these fields will be in the appropriate sections of the e-filing system.
If you're still unsure, it's always a good idea to review the instructions for NJ-1065 or consult with a tax professional who is familiar with New Jersey business taxes to ensure everything is properly filled out!
