Hello Dear Community,
I'm faced with an interesting situation. My son filed his taxes using TurboTax online filing. He paid his federal taxes using a credit card + $3.95 fees. The credit card was charged both amounts (i.e. Tax + service fee) the next day itself (i.e. Apr 18, 2023). Today he received a letter from the IRS saying his tax amount wasn't received, they levied a fine + interest on it and asked to pay the entire amount by June 26. I am asking myself what on earth is going on. Who must have gotten this wrong ? TurboTax or the IRS ??!!! I have the credit card statement as proof that the federal taxes owed were indeed paid. Why pay taxes twice ? This is simply bizzare !!
Two scenarios possible here:
1) Intuit paid the IRS but the IRS system somehow never received
2) Intuit "forgot" to apply the payment to the iRS (unlikely)
Any help appreciated. Who do I contact first ? Intuit or the IRS ?

The credit card statement showing the payment is your proof of payment. Contact the IRS using the information on the notice you received and talk to an agent since apparently the IRS has made a mistake.
