Sorry----you cannot e-file a past year return. E-filing for 2023 is permanently closed. The only way to file your 2023 return now is by mail. Print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail it in.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
AND...since you are apparently filing 2023 late...and on paper too, your 2023 AGI will thus not be in the IRS e-filing system.
So as long as you file your new 2024 taxes, on time....or before mid-October of 2025, in order to get it to e-file, you may need to indicate your 2023 AGI was a zero in order to get it to be "Accepted" (Again, since your 2023 AGI will not be in the IRS "e-filing" system, even if they have processed that late 2023 paper filing)
All IRS e-filing of personal Form 1040 tax returns is shut down now to prepare for 2024 filing. No one can e-file any Form 1040 tax return, for any year, until the IRS reopens e-filing sometime in January. They have not yet announced the date that e-filing will reopen.
