Overpayment from SSDI questions and when to report it was paid back

I have multiple questions regarding a situation, as it could end up in a number of scenerios.

My husband was on SSDI (Social Security Disability) for a time period due to stage 4 cancer.

He did return to work Novemeber 2024. It was properly reported to SSDI office. All paperwork handled.

They pay 1 month behind, so last actual check should have been the one he recieved 12/2024.

He continued getting checks in 2025, and we kept reporting it and were basically told to hang tight his case was still under review.  Said possible 9 month work trial, Whatever.

We contacted them Again in Sept of 2025 hoping to get an asnwer, and if we owed money back for them to please send us a bill after them saying it did not look like he was owed benefits in 2025, but still no decision made or bill sent to us to pay back money. It never happened. Again, hold tight.

Now we are closing into the end of the year, and I am stressed about how this will affect our Tax filing for 2025. We are almost positive he will owe a bug chunk of money back for 2025 income.

Scenerio 1

We are lucky enough to get a bill from them to pay it all back in  Dec 2025 BEFORE the first of the year, and then any tax forms we get from them would reflect what we paid back already, and we are all good to file taxes late January. (we paid in taxes so even if paid back we need tax form to show what we paid in on that money)

Scenerio 2

SS continues to drag thier feet for months from now, and then decide to send us a bill to pay the 2025 income money back anytime in the following year 2026? Whether before or after we already filed our taxes.

1. If we end up owing money back but do not get the bill to pay them back until 2026, does that mean we would have to go back and amend our 2025 taxes? (cause in the end that was no longer income in 2025?)

if I would have to amend 2025, how do I do that? would SSDI send a new updated tax form to file?

OR

2 If we get a bill in 2026 we owe the money back, we would instead get a tax form for 2026 to include that income pay back information in 2026 taxes?

I apologise, I hope my questions make sense, this is already causing me anxiety wondering what will happen in the months coming up, when we typically file taxes in late Jan and and scared this won't be resolved by then.

Thank you to anyone who is kind enough to explain the situation to me in a way I can understand.

You deal with it when you get a statement or tax form.  There will be no need to amend a previous return
