Over-contribution to Roth IRA

I had a Roth IRA over contribution in 2022, and i just discovered that a few weeks ago. And after researching, what i did was:

1. I rolled back the 2022 entire Roth contribution

2. I also rolled back the entire 2023 Roth and traditional contribution but realized i did not need to, so re-contributed to 2023 traditional IRA.

And it does seem like I need to pay penalty on the 2022 over contribution this tax season.

Want to confirm: whether the steps i took are correct? and also on the penalty part? thanks!!

Over-contribution to Roth IRA

The 2022 overcontribution should have been reported on your 2022 tax return and you should have paid a penalty on it then.  The 2023 problem was fixed before the due date of the return so you don't need to report it.

If you didn't report the 2022 overcontribution on your 2022 return you can amend the return before you file the 2023 return and then report the withdrawal to correct the overcontribution on the 2023 return.
