SSN/ITIN and the Child Tax Credit
So I am a resident alien on a work visa. For our children we only got ITIN's after we arrived and I now understand that this is no longer enough to qualify for the Child Tax Credit.
Is my understanding correct though that if we apply and get them a SSN prior to filing then I can then claim the CTC with no issues? So I have until April15th to do this? Or I could even file for an extension if this is not long enough?

If they are eligible for SSNs, you must have the Social Security number before you file an “on time” tax return. An on time tax return is filed before April 15, or before October 15 if you get the extension before April 15.

Ok thanks, I will follow up with Social Security, from reading maybe the kids cannot get a SSN. It seems that SSN are only given to non citizens who have the permission to work from the DHS, which my kids do not have

SSN/ITIN and the Child Tax Credit
I have spoken to the Social Security office and also a tax attorney and I cannot get SSN's for my children as they do not qualify. As a non-citizen and non green card holder, only people with valid work authorization (EAD) can apply for a SSN. There are exceptions but getting the SSN in order to get the Child Tax Credit is not one of them.
Basically with the tax law changes, only US Citizens or Green card holders are now able to apply for a SSN for their children and therefore be eligible for the Child Tax Credit. If you have an ITIN for your child you qualify for the $500 per child credit.
