Non-resident state tax between NY-NJ

My spouse and I live in NJ, and non-resident of NY state. My spouse works in NY and I work in NJ. Our federal tax status is 'married-jointly'. When i try to file the NY state tax (as married-jointly), it doesn't make sense why NY state taxes our combined income and not just the income earned by my spouse alone?
