No Refund

I received a 12c letter asking that I fax my wage and withholding forms. I did this in early March. I never got a response. I call a couple weeks ago and was told to mail in everything. I did this and still no refund. What can I do? I filed in February using TurboTax.

Hi,

It sounds to me like you responded to an IRS 12c notice about missing or incomplete information in your return and have not heard back from the IRS. I am assuming you did not purchase Max Audit Defense. If you did purchase Max Audit Defense, you do want to reach out to that company using this contact information:

  • Phone: (877) 829-9695
  • Email: intuit.audit.sales@taxaudit.com Site:
  • intuit.taxaudit.com/intuit

If you did not purchase Max, know that TurboTax does not have access to these IRS communications.  I recommend you call the IRS phone number included in the IRS 12-c notice.  When you reach the IRS representative, take note of their ID # and name and note the date you spoke with them and their instructions and conclusions.  If you mail anything else to them, we recommend you send it certified, return receipt requested (certified will help you prove you sent it, return receipt requested will you know they got it).

Tax processing can be slow, but this has been awhile.  Reach out to the IRS and see if you can get next steps. If necessary, you can also reach out to the Tax Payer Advocate service using this website.  https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/

If you no longer have the notice, you may be able to access a copy using your IRS Tax Account

or you can likely reach a human being by following this script (however, the number they gave you on the tax notice is preferred)

PHONE CHEAT SHEET TO GET A REAL PERSON IN IRS

The IRS telephone number is 1-800-829-1040, and they are available from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. local time, Monday thru Friday.

  1. The first question the automated system will ask you is to choose your language. (English is 1)
  2. Once you’ve set your language, don’t choose Option 1 (regarding refund info).
  3. Press 2 for “For answers about your personal income taxes..” instead.
  4. Next, press 1 for “For questions about a form you have already submitted...”
  5. Next, press 3 “for all other questions.”
  6. Next, press 2 “for all other questions.”
  7. When the system asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don’t enter anything. After it asks twice, you will be prompted with another menu.
  8. Next, press 2 for “personal or individual tax related questions”
  9. Finally, press 3 for “all other inquiries.” The system should then transfer you to an agent.

Good luck and hang in there.

Since you just mailed the documentation in, I would suggest giving the IRS a bit of time to resolve the issue. When paper documents are sent in it requires manual evaluation and that department is still a bit behind. If you do not get this resolved in an appropriate time or disagree with IRS then you do have the option of contacting Taxpayer Advocate.

If you would like to know more about the Taxpayer Advocate I have posted the link below.

I hope it helps, please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Enjoy your day!!

No Refund

Hi,

I just checked the where's my refund site and it finally says it was approved and will be in my bank by Monday. I did send that information the last time making them sign saying they received it. I still will hold my breath until I see a deposit.

Thanks for your response.
