What exactly do you need help with on form 4684? Please provide more details.

Currently form 4684 is not finalized by the IRS and it is not available on TurboTax. It is currently expected to be available approximately February 5.

Have you already filed?  Has your tax return been accepted?

If your tax return has been filed and accepted, you will have to file an amended tax return to report IRS form 4684.  See TurboTax Help here.

Here is how you amend a Federal tax return which has already been filed and accepted.

IRS form 4684 Casualties and Thefts will be available in TurboTax Online on February 12.  See forms availability here.

Here is a copy of the IRS form and a copy of the IRS form instructions.

i do not understand why TurboTax will not let me file until 4684 is available.  I do not need to report any loss so I do not need this form.

IRS needs to finalize and approve Form 4684 before it is available in TurboTax.

The availability date is 02/12/2020.

If you don't need the form you can delete it by follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Select Tax Tools from the left menu then Tools
  3. Select Delete a form
  4. Locate the form and select delete next to it.

I found the form on the IRS website. I'm not sure what is taking so long for it to be available in Turbotax. It's the only thing I'm waiting for.

We lost the use of our home for a year, and the insurance only paid 2 months rent of the 12, and we had to pay the moves, the utilities, the insurance, the rent, PLUS the cost of our mortgage, HOA, utilities and insurance on the condo we could not live in because of ongoing flooding.  We could not sue - no lawyer would take the suit, and insurance would not cover us because it was a named storm that caused the initial flooding, plus the building defects had caused us to be part of a class action suit that was not settled.  NO ONE WOULD help us and we were out all of that money until they finally began to make repairs.  Is this the right form to use to try to recoup some of our loss and if not, where else do we go for what we need??  Thank you Judy

Unfortunately, you're no longer allowed to deduct such a loss.  The deduction for personal casualty or theft losses has been suspended (eliminated) through Tax Year 2025, unless the loss occurred in a federally-declared disaster area and was directly caused by the disaster.

Please see the TurboTax Help article "What if I have property that was lost or damaged (a casualty loss)?" for more information.
