My summary is $139 owed total, when processing the payment suddenly it’s $839. I’ve paid 98% of my taxes according to turbotax. Why does the amount change so much?

To be clear the federal amount owed jumps up $800 without explanation when I try to pay it. I’ve had several programs confirm that my amount owed should be $139. There is no explanation to why the amount increases.

I'm not sure why, but please check your tax return.

You can preview your FORM 1040 tax return by going to:

  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.
  2. Select Tax Tools
  3. On the drop-down select Tools
  4. On the popup menu
  5. Select View Tax Summary
  6. On the left sidebar
  7. Select Preview my 1040.

Look at line 37.  This is the amount that you owe.

There should not be a penalty on line 38.

Now look at lines 24 Total tax, and line 33 total payments.

The difference between these should be the amount that you owe.

This should be the same as the number on line 37.

If it shows the $836 we can try to evaluate what happened.

Please contact us again with any additional details.

Gee, $139 sounds like the Turbo Tax fees not the tax due.  Or was it showing the net of federal and state?   Are you getting a refund from the state?  At the end Turbo Tax shows you the net of both.  But you will still get the full refund and need to pay any tax due.

Better print out your return and see which is right.  Before filing you can preview the 1040 or print the whole return
