My mailed tax return hasn't been accepted yet...?

I messed up my first time doing my taxes online somehow and when I called for help the lady walked me through it and I ended up having to print and mail my returns and they still haven't been accepted by either state or IRS. What do I do ? :(

My mailed tax return hasn't been accepted yet...?

The term "accepted" is normally used only for efiled returns.   Mailed returns are not "accepted" in that sense.   When filing by mail, returns are received by the tax agency, processed, and then approved.    Then the refund (if applicable) is sent.

So if you printed and mailed your returns, then you physically had to do that yourself.  TurboTax does not mail them for you.   The Federal and state returns should have been mailed separately.  The Federal return is mailed to the IRS, and the state return is mailed to the state tax agency.   Sometimes the state tax agency also wants a copy of the Federal return (or specified forms from it) included with the state mailing.

You didn't say how long it's been since you mailed your returns.  If you are due a Federal refund, it takes at least 4 weeks for a mailed return to even show up in the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool.

See what is displayed there about your Federal refund.  If it's been over 4 weeks, is it showing up there yet?

Here are some tips when using the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool:

  •  If you mailed a paper return, it won't show up in the tool for at least 4 weeks.
  • Be sure you enter the correct tax year, SSN and filing status.
  • Be sure you are using only the Federal refund amount.   Do not include any state refund or any total refund or net refund (Fed and State) that TurboTax may have provided on a screen.
  • Look at your actual Federal return to get the Federal refund amount, i.e., your Form 1040, Line 35a.

Are you due a state refund?  The FAQ below tells how to check on a state refund and has a link for your state.  Then you'll see information for your state (which may include info on how long it takes in your state) and a link to go to your state's "Where's My Refund" tool.   It may also have a link to your state's department of revenue.   Your state may also have a FAQ section at it's "Where's My Refund" site that tells how long to expect in your state, and how to contact them to inquire.
