That is in no way helpful to someone in an anxious state - maybe next time include an answer with your administrative criticism. I reposted it because it suggested the wrong section. Blame TurboTax.
Try looking up your employer in the SEC's EDGAR database. If it's a large company you can usually find their EIN number on there. You can also try Googling it in various ways: Find "EIN", "Employer Identification Number", and "FEIN" for [legal name of company]. Other than that, just go ahead and file your taxes IF you have another W-2 to enter. Then, once your return has been accepted and once you've gotten the EIN, you can file an amendment to your return. Then at least you'll have "filed" on time. If you don't have another W-2 to enter, you'll just have to wait until you can reach someone in management, payroll, human resources, or accounting to give you the EIN. They are individualized like social security numbers so most aren't published, but many larger companies (registered with the SEC) can be found online because they have so many employees. Our daughter is completely missing a W-2 so she has to wait until tomorrow and file one day late...grrrr. Didn't realize she'd never received a W-2 for a company she worked for until December, and the company changed their online platform (no longer using ADP for payroll) in mid-January so she can no longer access it online. She has to call corporate headquarters tomorrow to get her entire W-2, but I spent HOURS trying to help her find the EIN online in hopes that TurboTax would be able to import her W-2 information automatically. Huge bummer. Glad she doesn't make a ton of money (still a college student) so her penalties won't be bad, but filing one day late is still better than one month late. Penalties increase the longer you wait. Get some rest and call in the morning to get it and finish filing if you can't find it on the SEC's EDGAR system. Good luck to you!
If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
But....since your daughter is missing the deadline......
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device
