My 2019 taxes were rejected because my daughter filed independently. We both snail mailed amendments and mine. I haven't heard from the IRS. What should I do?

My college age daughter filed before me as an independent but was in college for half the year. I did my taxes on Turbo Tax but was rejected since I tried to claim her as an independent. She did an amendment and I photocopied my taxes and mailed it all together to the IRS back in July. The IRS has not gotten back with us and when I try to check the "refund status" button, it does not say if they have even received the paperwork. Anyone know what I should do next?

It will take 6 months or more for the IRS to process your returns so all you can do is wait.

You mailed your original return with her amended return?  That was the wrong thing to do.  They will only process one of them.  You always need to mail returns in separate envelopes or the IRS will miss one.  One of you may need to mail theirs again.

If you mailed them in July it will be awhile.

In normal times it takes up to 16 weeks or more to process an Amended 1040X return. But these are not normal times. They just started opening the mail in June that's been stacking up. Back in March the IRS closed their processing centers and stopped processing mailed tax returns. An IRS spokesperson recently said that they have about 11 million pieces of unopened mail. The IRS says.."We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it." So you have to keep waiting.
