Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

Multiple Users Access

Beginning in Tax Year 2023 you can only use ONE account.  I get the fact that you now supposed to own ALL the computers but in reality if you want family members to file their own taxes chances are they own their own computers.  For discussion purposes, let's assume you bought the TT software, created your account, and filed your taxes.  Now you want to give the program to your daughter who lives 50 miles away.  When she is ready to file taxes, she can no longer create her own account and use the software because the software is assigned to your account.  Okay.  QUESTION:  for her to use the software I'm assuming you will have to give your daughter your user ID and password to access your account.  I am also assuming she can't access your account because TT sends you a code to your cell phone to confirm it is really you, so every time she wants to access your account she will need the code sent to your cell phone???

Moving on, let's assume she now has access to your account, uses the software and files her taxes.  The question is, since she has access to your account does she also have access to YOUR tax return?

If I got the sequence all wrong please correct where I went astray.   Thanks.

You have everything correct and will be giving your daughter full access to your tax return.  It may be worth it to let her buy her own software and use her own account so that you can maintain your account privacy.

TurboTax has required a license code obtained from your TurboTax account since tax year 2019 when installing one of the TurboTax desktop editions.

The End User License for the software has always stipulated that the software can only be installed on up to 5 computers owned by the purchaser of the software.

When installing the software you are asked to provide the license code.  After the installation is completed the license code is not needed again for that particular computer unless the software has to be re-installed.

Using the TurboTax desktop editions there is no limit on the number of tax returns that can be completed using the software installed on the computer.

For your scenario, you will be breaking the End User Agreement by providing your daughter the software and the license code.  Can this be done, Yes she could install the software on her computer, sign onto your TurboTax account with your User ID and Password and enter the license code during installation.  She would no longer need to access your TurboTax account once the software has completed installation.  She can complete as many tax returns as needed using her computer and not have to access your TurboTax account again.

No she will not have access to your returns, not unless they were done on the same computer. The returns are not saved or stored in your online account. Only the License Code.  A desktop return is only on the computer that prepared it.  And I think it keeps track of how many efiles were done in your account. So If they did 5 efiles on another computer you might not be able to efile anymore from your computer.
