Last year (2023 tax year) I finished most of my taxes in Turbo tax by 1/30/24 and I saved a file in Turbo Tax. I was using the software version of TurboTax abd have never used the online version (so there is no back up). A month later I added remaining data such as stock transactions on 2/28/24 and filed my taxes. Unfortunately, two weeks later I got a virus and had to reformat my computer, which resulted in losing the Turbotax file which I filed with the IRS. I already went to the IRS website and was able to download my transcript of my tax return but obviously that's in a different format from Turbo Tax. If I need to rebuild last years return how exactly would I do this? Would that mean I have to go back to Turbotax 2023 and save all the data in there and if so would that let me export a file which I could then import into Turbo Tax 2024? My taxes aren't so simple because of a lot of 1099-MIS and 1099-INT forms along with self-employment income.

Yes you would have to recreate your 2023 return from scratch. What about 2022? Did you use Turbo Tax and have any backups like the .tax2022 file? If you find the .tax2022 file you could Transfer it to 2023 to start 2023 over. Then when you get 2023 file like you originally filed it you can Transfer 2023 into 2024. But if you are going to do the work to redo 2023 you might as well just do 2024 fresh and manually enter anything from 2023 as you go along.
Doesn't sound like you have a pdf file or print out of 2023 either? I guess you've learned to make backups frequently as you work on it. Especially after you file and save the pdf too.
