I opened Turbo Tax 2023 to file an amendment to our 2023 tax return. I made the decision to do it while I was online and clicked "ok" to check for updates and installed them. I was not aware there was an issue with updates deleting an entire saved tax return off your computer. The 2023 return had already been e-filed in 2024, but I lost important documents that I will need in the future. I searched for .tax2023 to find the file and it is gone. I do have the .pdf version and a printed copy. I filled out Form1040X anyway using the 2023 software and will mail it. I was using the Costco download version of Premier for Mac because I own rentals. Now that I have lost the saved rental and depreciation information for 2023 I am not sure how that will affect future tax returns? If we sell a rental we will not have the information for 2023 that will be needed for the software to do the calculations correctly for capital gains or 1031 tax exchanges. I searched the Turbo Tax Community and it is a KNOWN ISSUE to lose a saved tax return after an update. There should be a warning in CAPITAL LETTERS clearly stating that you are risking losing your tax return even if it is saved, for .tax2023 (insert what ever year you are updating) if you proceed with this update. The only way to avoid this is to turn off your Wifi every time before you open your tax return after you have started to work on your taxes. I will be filing a complaint with Turbo Tax, at the very least they should refund my full purchase price for their defective software! This issue wasted at least 3 hours of my time this morning trying fix it to no avail. Does anyone know of a way to get this deleted file back?
