Letter 6419

We are a retired couple with no dependents, and have filed as such. We are at the review stage in TurboTax, and receive the warning that "Advance Payments received must be entered". It shows the form under child credits and letter 6419. What must we have entered to receive this warning? I have looked over everything. Is this a flaw in the software?

Per the IRS, Letter 6419 has to do with :

  • Total amount of 2021 advance Child Tax Credit (CTC) payments
  • Number of qualifying children used to calculate advance payments, and repayment protection when filing your 2021 federal tax return

Based on your explanation of being retired with no dependents, you may have inadvertently selected yes to a question surrounding dependents and or child tax credits. Please review those sections.

I have the same issue as SewMom4Home. Additionally, I am retired, married with no dependents. I went so far as to completely redo my taxes noting that I never entered anything re: child credits. It appears to be a flaw in the software. How do we work around this? I entered $0.00 on the federal form (8812?) and the errors went away...but I don't want my return to be rejected because of this.

In 2021, everyone is being asked to confirm that they did not receive any Advanced Child Tax Credit payments even if they are not claiming any children on their return. To confirm you did not receive any advance payments:

  1. In the Federal section of your return, go to Deductions & Credits
  2. Scroll down to You and Your Family and click Revisit/Start next to Advance payments, Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits
  3. Click Continue
  4. Answer Let's start with where you spent the most time in 2021.
  5. Answer No to Did you receive any advance Child Tax Credit payments in 2021?
