Joint is the best way to file.  Don't confuse personal itemized Deductions on Schedule A with his business expenses on schedule C.  They are different things.   You can either take the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions whichever is more.  And he can still deduct his self employment expenses.

For Joint the Standard Deduction is $12,700 plus $1,250 if you are over 65.

You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if he has any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version.  Or any of the Desktop programs.  But you will get the most help in the Home & Business version.
