It isn't allowing me to file as head of household even though I pay 100% of household expenses. How do I prove to the software that I pay more than 50%?

We are a single-income household and my dependant is disabled. There is no other income to make the household expenses anything less than 100%.

For the purposes of the Head of Household filing status, a qualifying person is a child, parent, or relative who meets certain conditions, listed below. If the person is not related to you, they may be your dependent, but you can't claim head of household based on them.

The conditions are stricter than those for claiming a dependent; for example, you might be able to claim a roommate as your dependent, but never as a qualifying person for Head of Household status.

A qualifying child would be:

  • Your child (including legally adopted), stepchild, foster child, sibling, half-sibling, step-sibling, or a descendant of any of them (for example, your grandchild or niece) AND
  • Permanently and totally disabled OR under the age of 19 as of December 31, 2022 (under 24 if a full-time student) and younger than you (or your spouse, if filing jointly) AND
  • Lived with you for more than half the year AND
  • Single (or if the child is married, you'd have to qualify to claim them as a dependent even if you're not going to claim them as such).

If your dependent meets all of the tests above, then a question must be answered incorrectly in TurboTax.

You can qualify for Head of Household if you:

  1. Were unmarried as of December 31, 2022 and
  2. Paid more than half the cost to run your (or a qualifying parent's) home this year (rent, mortgage, utilities, etc.) and
  3. Supported a qualifying person.

If you were still legally married as of December 31, 2022, and a child lives with you, you can qualify for Head of Household under a slightly different set of rules

Revisit My Info Section and make sure that you have answered all the questions correctly. Make sure to to indicate that the dependent did not provide more than half of his/her own support

I was unmarried for all of 2022, paid 100% of home costs, and supported a qualifying person.

I've checked and rechecked the answers and I'm still getting this message: "We checked, and even though you have a dependent, you don't qualify as Head of Household because you didn't pay for more than 50% of household expenses."

Even though my answer to this question, "Did you pay for more than half of xxx's living expenses in 2022?" is "Yes".

What is the age of the dependent?  Has "Was disabled" been selected under the dependent information?  To review, click My Info down the left side of the screen.

You may qualify for Head of Household filing status if you:

  • Were unmarried as of December 31, 2022 and
  • Paid more than half the cost of keeping up your home during the tax year (rent, mortgage, utilities, etc.), and
  • Supported a qualifying person.

If you were legally married as of December 31, 2022 and a child lives with you, you may qualify for Head of Household filing status if:

  • You will not be filing jointly with your spouse,
  • Your spouse did not live in your home during the last six months of the year,
  • Your home was your child's, stepchild's, or foster child's main home for more than half the year,
  • You paid more than half the costs of keeping up your home during the tax year,
  • You meet the qualifications to claim the child as your dependent, even if the other (noncustodial) parent is actually claiming the child as a dependent on their return.

Do I qualify for Head of Household in 2022?

Go through the TurboTax questions and review your responses. You may have inadvertently answered a question that is not allowing you to file as Head of Household (HOH).

  1. Select My info from the left side menu.
  2. On the Personal info summary screen, scroll down to your dependent and Edit.
  3. On the Who do you support? screen, make a selectin.
  4. Review your responses, especially the Date of birth and Citizenship.
  5. On the Tell us more about XXX living situation last year question, review Did your dependent pay for more than half of their living expenses and other support? If you answered "yes", your dependent is not your dependent if they paid for more than 50% of their living expenses. By answering "yes", TurboTax would not allow you to file using the HOH filing status.
  6. Continue through the TurboTax interview and review each question to make sure you answered it correctly.
  7. If after reviewing your responses, TurboTax is still not allowing you to claim HOH, please review the TurboTax FAQ's Who can I claim as my dependent? and Do I qualify for Head of Household in 2022?

Helen,

Regarding this:

On the Tell us more about XXX living situation last year question, review Did your dependent pay for more than half of their living expenses and other support? If you answered "yes", your dependent is not your dependent if they paid for more than 50% of their living expenses. By answering "yes", TurboTax would not allow you to file using the HOH filing status.

The ACTUAL question is "Did you pay for more than half of xxxx's living expenses in 2022?" To which I answer yes.
