I use the standard deduction for my federal return, but my state (California) still pulled in Schedule A because I itemize state deductions. So it's a bit odd that my state return includes a federal form that is not part of my federal return, but it seems that is ok. Now I need to amend my state return because I need to make a Schedule A correction. Because I am correcting Schedule A, TurboTax wants to file amended returns for both. Is there a way to shut that down so it only worries about the amended state return? I'm thinking perhaps just deleting the Form 1040-X might do that.

What do you need to change on Schedule A? Maybe that will change the federal Standard Deduction into itemized and be good. Since you have to print and mail prior year amended returns just don’t mail the federal.
I need to make adjustments (downward) to the amount of mortgage interest that is deductible. It will not result in itemizing for federal.
I finally found the FAQ to Amend state
The problem with the FAQ is step 8:
> Continue through the screens to make the necessary changes to your state return.
In my case the "necessary changes" include updating Federal Schedule A. This seems to trigger also doing a Federal amended return even though the Schedule A changes don't impact it (because I'm using the standard deduction).
