Generally (but not always), state incomes start with the federal income. Then, things are added to and subtracted from state income to arrive at taxable state income.
Did they tell you what state income item was not reported correctly on your state return?
Thank you for your reply. This is the notice I received at home.
This doesn't tell us why you were audited and what the issues were. It just says that Massachusetts decided that you owed an additional $1473 in taxes plus penalties. You need to call the number on there and ask them what the issues were that led to this extra tax. It could be that something was left off of your return. It could also be a mistake. You won't know until you call them.
Before you call make sure that you have copies of your 2019 tax returns in front of you. The deadline to answer this passed six weeks ago so you should call them right away.
