look at Line 30 of your tax return..... I suspect there is a number there that you were not entitled to as it was in error. Did you file prior to Feb 12? I've seen other posts where TT has a bug and reported more on Line 30 than was correct.
How much did you receive for each of the first two stimulus payment?
what is on Line 30?
please post back the answers and we can figure this out.
Yes, I filed prior to February 12. On line 30, it says $600. My two stimulus payments were 600 and 1400.
okay, please answer again as neither of the 1st two payments could have been $1400,
how much did you receive for EACH stimulus payment:
1st payment?
2nd payment?
3rd Payment?
1st payment: (this was $1200 for a single person - payments made in April - July, 2020)
2nd payment: (this was $600 for a single person - payments made in January, 2021)
3rd Payment: (this is for 2021 and was $1400 for a single person - payments made recently)
Here's what we need to know.
What did you receive in round 1 (paid between April and July, usually)?
What did you receive in round 2 (paid between December and February)
What did you claim on line 30?
What filing status did you use?
How many dependents did you claim, and how old are they?
How much did the IRS reduce your refund by?
We do not need to know about the round 3 payment, which was $1400 per person, issued starting in late February or March.
I have the same problem. The IRS took $1200 from my refund, which I'm due to receive soon, and gave this same explanation. Married Filing Jointly, combined income is less than 150k, and line 30 says $1200. No dependents.
We received the stimuli as expected for 2 people both times in 2020, and again in 2021. All were direct deposited directly into our account and had no issue with the amount or time it took to deposit.
Looking at the other comments here, it appears there was a bug in TurboTax? I'm just wondering if this is that bug, or if there is something else wrong. I e-filed with TurboTax within a few days of receiving the W2s, before Feb 12th.
If so, I guess this bug is why it has taken until April for me to receive a refund on my taxes, when in past years it has been within 2 weeks of filing. I understand the IRS is crazy right now, but I didn't have anything weird on my taxes at all. I just did the standard deduction, e-filed, and direct deposit.
UPDATE!
So, I called Turbo Tax to help me out with the situation and it was in fact, an error on the form (Line 30 to be precise as NCperson pointed out as well) even though I've filled it out correctly. The message from the IRS only list off the dependent deal if I really was trying to claim dependents, but did not do it properly.
Since I did receive my 3 stimulus payments earlier, that is the reason for the deduction in the tax return. Kind of a hope breaker when you see it, but to be fair, it does make sense that such amount is deducted because of said error on Turbo Tax.
I hope my situation help clarifies for others facing the same issue. 👍
@SweetieJean please read the thread just above this one by @cylenx - as I tried to explain to you.... there was a bug...and that explains a lot of posts where folks think their refund is being reduced...and it is because Line 30 was inflated which caused the refund expectation to be inflated!
