if you only use Tubotax basic it's free but it only includes a limited number of federal forms. state is extra. more complicated return upgrade basic to a higher version starting at $129. you may qualify to use one of the free versions offered through this IRS website. it is unknown if these sites charge extra for states

if you are in certain states you can use IRS Directfile if you meet the criteria
